Skinny Lips and the Sound Malfunction

Skinny Lips and the Sound Malfunction is a classically trained trombone quartet with a vision to revive the variety hour. Our goal is to make audiences listen, laugh, and participate by combining instrumental music and sketch comedy. The show is designed to demonstrate how we connect with music and encourage our audience to do the same. This is NOT your grandparent's classical music. We're taking the important legacy we've been given to a new, exciting, and inclusive direction! Be a part of our journey!

In November 2013, Callan and Danny decided to focus their musical talents at putting on a variety show. They quickly realized they needed help. Soon after, Case, Steve, and Shelly jumped on board and Skinny Lips & The Sound Malfunction began to take form.

Callan Milani, a California native, is a graduate of Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He is an active freelancer in the San Francisco Bay area and has performed with notable artists that include Michael Giacchino and Dick Van Dyke. Callan enjoys drinking Americanos and making scenes in public places.

Danny Lawlor is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. A native of Southern California, he now freelances in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. He has performed with the San Diego Opera and has a large private studio of young aspiring trombonists. Dan plays disc golf and spends far too much time with his dog, Mick.

Steven Warren, a graduate of Oklahoma State University and Northwestern University, is currently living in the Los Angeles area pursuing a degree from The Colburn School. He has performed with notable conductors such as Leonard Slatkin and James Conlon. Steven aspires to one day own his own margarita slushy bar and hopes nobody has come up with the idea yet.

Case Wiseman graduated from Northwestern University, studying trombone performance under Michael Mulcahy, Peter Ellefson, and Timothy Higgins. When not listening to classical or jazz music, he listens to old school R&B and 1960’s easy listening. Case is an expert horticulturist and if you have any questions about growing anything, just ask Case.

Shelly Suminski received her Bachelors of Music in Trombone Performance from the University of Southern California as a recipient of the Robert Marsteller Outstanding Brass Musician Award. Shelly earned her MFA from California Institute of the Arts studying under Jim Miller.  She currently lives and performs in Los Angeles surviving off of lots and lots and lots of coffee.
